 Grand Egyptian Museum

The Grand Egyptian Museum, often referred to as GEM, is one of the most ambitious cultural projects in modern history. Located just outside Cairo, near the Giza Pyramids, this state-of-the-art museum is set to become the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization.

Once fully open, GEM will house more than 100,000 artifacts, including the complete collection of King Tutankhamun’s treasures displayed together for the first time since their discovery. More than just a museum, GEM is a global cultural hub that combines ancient heritage with modern technology, education, and design.

Location and Design

GEM sits just two kilometers from the Giza Plateau and has been designed to offer a stunning visual connection to the Pyramids. The architecture of the museum blends modern lines with pharaonic inspiration, featuring a grand glass façade, wide open plazas, and landscaped gardens.

The museum spans an area of around 500,000 square meters, making it not only massive in size but also monumental in scope. The layout allows for smooth visitor flow, large-scale exhibitions, and immersive educational experiences.

Key Highlights

  • Tutankhamun Gallery: The full collection of over 5,000 items from the boy king’s tomb, many of which have never been displayed before. This includes his golden mask, chariots, jewelry, clothing, and even his sandals.
  • Grand Atrium: Upon entry, visitors are welcomed by a colossal 11-meter-high statue of Ramses II, setting the tone for the scale and majesty of the museum.
  • Royal Mummies Hall: A specially climate-controlled section dedicated to the preserved remains of Egypt’s most famous rulers, offering a respectful yet fascinating glimpse into ancient funerary practices.
  • Conservation Center: One of the largest of its kind in the world, where experts from around the globe are working to preserve artifacts using the latest technology.
